Packing a Lunch-Day 7

Every night, after I put my son to bed, I come down the stairs and try to tidy up a bit. I load and start the dishwasher, I put away some of my son’s toys, organize his clothes and bag for school the next day, and program my coffee pot to brew my coffee for me when I come downstairs in the morning. Then, the last DREADED chore awaits me…

Packing a lunch. I HATE packing my lunch for school the next day. Sometimes I put it off till the morning, and then I am really crabby because there is not time in the morning to do this job. Why is this such a dreaded task?! I don’t know. But it is. Every. single. time.

I don’t like packing dinner leftovers beacuase I would rather save those for dinner leftovers the next night. Those dreaded freezer meals at the grocery store just take too long in the microwave when we only have about 30 minutes to eat. Let me rephrase that, by the time we drop our kids off at the lunchroom, check out mailbox, and stop in the bathroom, really more like 20 minutes.

So, last night when I was doing my nighttime routine, a wonderful thing happened. As I got to the last task on my to do list, I remembered that we had a luncheon the next day! YES!! Our lunch crew is awesome at celebrating birthdays. When someone’s birthday rolls around we ask them what they would like for their birthday lunch. They can either pick a theme like appetizers, salads, a taco bar, etc. Sometimes we order in, too. We have even been so desperate for a luncheon we have said just do a pot luck and bring anything from your fridge or freezer. Those can be hilarious.

Today we ordered in…our lively lunch group usually is swapping funny stories and cracking each other up but today it was almost silent as we enjoyed our delicious lunch—that we did not have to pack!

Now, only if I had saved half for tomorrow…because tonight I will have to make a lunch for Friday. 🙂 Oh well, hopefully we celebrate someone’s birthday next week!

What a blessing the coffee is in the morning! My answer to the lunch thing is canned soup. I love soup, and this nasty cold winter has driven me to a super soup fest.

  2. I couldn’t agree more! It’s almost as bad as putting away your laundry. Almost. What should seem so simple, always is such a daunting task. I feel like it’s one of the hardest decisions we make all day. Thanks for the laugh!!

  3. Well we know you will be celebrating your lunch soon so you won’t have to pack a lunch for that day–or at least make it last for 2 days!

  5. I hate packing lunches too! And I have to make my daughters as well! Double hate!
I have to do it right after dinner before I clean up or I cannot relax. On Fridays we usually order in and I let my daughter get hot lunch on Fridays so tonight I got a night off! It is the best school night of the week!

  6. Why is it that making lunch is such a chore?!? I was determined to make my lunch the night before, I think that ended six weeks into the school year. You hit the nail on the head! I love those days when I don’t have to pack.

  7. There is something so nice about having lunch taken care of! It sounds like you have such a nice lunch group! I’m envious! I love the writing of your opening paragraph–that long sentence in the middle of the paragraph really conveys the enormity of the work you do after you put your son to bed.

  8. Lunches are hard – I only work once in awhile and I still hate backing a lunch. Nice to have a group to eat with and share!
